District I.

The structural jewels of this district define the Buda side. The stunning Fisherman’s Bastion and Castle complex preside over the Danube from the Castle Hill. Winding through the charming and pristine streets of this area with their petite colorful houses, one finds everything from high-end restaurants to museums celebrating the exciting history of the area.

During the day, this area can be filled with tour groups visiting the beautiful buildings and going to the famous Ruszwurm cake shop. However, once the tourists depart to Pest for the evening, the Castle District is quiet and pleasant.

At the base of the hill lies the Taban area, a sort of small valley. This area is charming and diverse, with cute shops, sports facilities, and a large park. Not to mention the Rudas Bath is here, with its old Turkish pools and rooftop hot tub.

Flanking the Taban on the other side is the verdant Gellert Hill, with its many small hiking routes up to the Citadella and stunning views of the city.

Along the Danube, at the base of the Castle Hill, is a lovely promenade, with splendid views of Pest and nice establishments. Many highly-rated restaurants and special bars can be found here, including a few authentic Belgian beer pubs.

What to expect

District I is stunning and charming. There is a lot of green space and beautiful views. There are amazing gastronomic options and many opportunities for activities.

What not to expect

Since it is pretty touristy, this district, especially the Castle Hill, is crowded during the day. Conversely, shops and establishments do not stay open late here, making it not very lively at night.
